Appraisal Take-in Instructions - General Steps
- Clean items
- Inspect for loose/missing gemstones
- Photograph each item 3 angles, inside stampings, etc. ( see examples and more info below )
- Photograph any old appraisal, Independent lab report, receipt
- Record item information on the take- in sheet.
- Have the client fill out the client take-in form- make sure the purpose of the appraisal is checked
Evaluating an Item
- Identify all gemstones - Natural, lab grown, etc...
- Weigh entire item - grams or pennyweights
- Count and measure (in millimeters) all gemstones. Length x width x depth ( estimate where needed )
- Note any lab report numbers on the main diamond girdle
- Note any stamps- karat, hallmarks - inner shank, on clasps, back of pendants, earring backs
- Note color and clarity of diamonds
- Colored stones- Give general clarity ( 10 power clean , lightly, moderately, heavily included)
- Measure lengths of bracelets pendants, chains and widths of rings at the shoulders and shank base
Photographing Items
- Use a white background ( Plain sheet of copy paper works well)
- Overhead lamp
- No flash
- Close up as possible - leave some space around items ( I will crop & edit the photos )
